Tanzania is a diverse country with vibrant communities, cultures and traditions. While the country continues to experience economic and social development, some communities still face challenges in areas such as education, healthcare, employment, infrastructure and access to essential services.
Community volunteers can contribute their time, skills and ideas while working alongside local organizations and community members. The goal is not to replace local expertise, but to support existing initiatives and contribute to sustainable, community-led solutions.
In rural communities, agriculture remains an important part of everyday life, while access to education, healthcare, clean water and sanitation can remain challenging. In urban areas such as Mwanza, communities may face challenges including youth unemployment, limited economic opportunities and unequal access to services.
Through our community programs, volunteers can gain a deeper understanding of life in Tanzania while contributing to initiatives that support education, health, livelihoods, inclusion, environmental sustainability and community development.

How Can You Help?
Ways volunteers can make a difference
Volunteers support local organizations and community initiatives by sharing their skills, knowledge, time and experience. Depending on your interests and qualifications, you may contribute to education, healthcare, economic empowerment, agriculture, youth development, community development or conservation.
Education and Teaching
Support schools and learning initiatives by assisting with English, mathematics, science and other educational activities. Volunteers may also support reading programs, educational activities and the collection or organization of learning materials for schools.
Healthcare and Health Education
Qualified volunteers can support local healthcare initiatives within their professional scope. Other volunteers may assist with community health education, hygiene awareness, sanitation initiatives and health promotion activities.
Women and Gender Equality
Support initiatives that promote women's economic participation, financial literacy, entrepreneurship and access to opportunities. Volunteers may also contribute to awareness activities and community discussions focused on equality and inclusion.
Agriculture and Sustainable Development

Tanzania Early Childhood Education & Care (TECEC)
Tanzania Early Childhood Education & Care (TECEC) works to support early childhood development by empowering parents, caregivers and preschool teachers with resources and knowledge that promote children's health, development and learning.
Located in Nyegezi, Mwanza, TECEC provides an opportunity for volunteers interested in early childhood education and community development.
Beacon Teens Challenge
Beacon Teens Challenge addresses the struggles of drug addiction among Tanzanian youth, with its roots in the Beacon Mission Christian Center. This non-governmental organization aims to help individuals overcome drug and alcohol abuse through faith in God. Focusing on humanity value, the organization utilizes training and spiritual guidance, empowering victims to choose sobriety. Since its inception, it has seen significant positive transformations in those affected by addiction.
Upendo Daima (UDO)
Upendo Daima, meaning "Unconditional Love", is a community initiative associated with supporting vulnerable children in Mwanza. Its work has included support for children's education, healthcare, basic needs and family reintegration.
WoteSawa
WoteSawa is a non-governmental organization based in Mwanza that advocates for the rights of domestic workers and works to combat human trafficking, including child trafficking. Its work involves domestic workers, employers, families and community members.

Do I need previous experience?
Most programs welcome volunteers regardless of experience level. We match you with a placement that fits your skills, interests and availability.
Can I volunteer alone?
Yes — most of our volunteers travel solo. You'll live at VOT Hostel alongside other volunteers from around the world and a full-time local team, so you're never really on your own, and lasting friendships form fast.
How long can I volunteer?
We accept volunteers for as little as 1 week up to 6 months or more. The minimum recommended stay for meaningful impact is 2–4 weeks.
