Tanzania's healthcare system, managed by the Ministry of Health, includes both public and private services. It operates across three main levels:
- Primary Healthcare: Health centers and dispensaries that serve as the initial point of care, especially in rural areas.
- District Hospitals: Facilities that provide specialized care in towns and larger communities.
- Regional and National Hospitals: Advanced medical facilities equipped to handle complex and specialized medical issues.
Healthcare placements are ideal for medical students, nursing students, and future professionals who want real clinical exposure. You will observe and assist under the supervision of experienced local staff, making a tangible difference in community health.

Requirements & what's included
Do I need previous experience?
Most programs welcome volunteers regardless of experience level. For healthcare placements, some medical background is preferred. We match you with a placement that fits your skills.
What are the daily working hours?
Most placements run Monday to Friday, mornings into early afternoon. Healthcare placements can offer longer or shift-based hours if you want more hands-on time. We confirm your exact schedule with the placement before you arrive.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes — we require all volunteers to arrive with comprehensive travel and medical insurance, including cover for medical evacuation. VOT does not provide insurance, so please arrange your own before you travel and bring proof of cover.
