About this program
Ukerewe is Africa's largest inland island, covering 530 km² in Lake Victoria, about 50 km north of Mwanza. Getting there is part of the adventure — a 3-4 hour ferry ride, with a short 3.8km vehicle ferry connection, arriving at the island's main town, Nansio, surrounded by 27 smaller islands. It's a full-day or overnight excursion built around history, culture and simple island life.
- Kagunguli — the oldest Roman church on the island, built in 1895
- Chief's Palace at Bukindo, built 1922–1923
- Irondo Point — sweeping views back to Mwanza and traditional dance with the Buzegwe band
- The sacred Dancing Stone on Ukara Island

Requirements & what's included
Do I need to book in advance?
Yes — the ferry crossing and island activities are arranged by VOT ahead of time, so let us know when you'd like to go and we'll organize it around your placement.
What should I bring?
Comfortable walking shoes or sandals, sun protection, a light jacket for the ferry, and a camera — the crossing and island roads can be dusty.
Can I combine this with another placement or trip?
Yes — many volunteers pair Ukerewe with a Mwanza city day trip or a Serengeti safari during the same free weekend. Tell us your interests when you book.
