The Sukuma Museum at Bujora is a community-oriented organisation committed to promoting and honouring the traditional and contemporary arts of the Sukuma culture. Sukuma elders share traditional history and arts with younger generations in a hands-on, educational setting — a favourite half-day excursion for volunteers with a free day in Mwanza.

About this excursion
The Sukuma Museum is a community-oriented organisation committed to promoting and honouring the traditional and contemporary arts of the Sukuma people, Tanzania's largest ethnic group. On this half-day trip from VOT Hostel, Sukuma elders share traditional history and arts with younger generations in an interactive, educational environment — a rich cultural add-on for volunteers on any placement.

Requirements & what's included
Do I need to book this in advance?
We recommend telling us a few days ahead so we can arrange transport and a guide, but the trip can often be added to your schedule at short notice if you're already volunteering with us — just ask the VOT team.
What should I bring or wear?
Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and a camera. Modest dress is appreciated when visiting the museum's traditional dwellings and meeting Sukuma elders.
Can I visit if I'm in Mwanza on a short trip, not a full placement?
Yes — this excursion is open to current volunteers and short-term visitors alike. Contact us and we'll arrange the visit around your dates.
