About this program
This is one of the more unusual placements VOT offers, and genuinely rare in the Tanzania volunteer market. It's built for volunteers with a background in geology, mining or environmental science who want real field exposure rather than a classroom-only placement, working alongside a local field supervisor around Mwanza.
Mwanza gives volunteers a natural outdoor classroom — the city is known locally as "Rock City" for the large granite rock formations that rise across it, most famously Bismarck Rock, the balancing boulder formation on the Lake Victoria shoreline. It's a visible, well-known reminder of the region's rock landscape, and a familiar backdrop for fieldwork and downtime alike.

Requirements & what's included
Do I need prior geology experience?
Some background helps, but it isn't mandatory. Because this is a specialised, individually matched placement, we ask you to share your CV and academic background when you apply, so we can pair you with the right field supervisor and fieldwork for your level.
What should I bring or wear?
Sturdy closed shoes, clothes you don't mind getting dirty, sun protection and a reusable water bottle. Bring a notebook if you have one. We'll brief you on each field day's activity and any specific gear needed before you head out.
Can I combine this with another placement?
